Secrets of the roast date

Contrary to popular belief, drinking a coffee that was roasted today is not necessarily better than a coffee that was roasted a week or even one, two or three months ago.

Chasing “freshness” in roasted coffee will make you crazy and will also not guarantee you the best cup. That’s because roasted coffee can continue to develop flavors for a while after the roasting process.

If you believe coffee that was roasted 30 days ago and packaged in a polyethylene-lined bag with a one-way degassing valve to keep oxygen out is past its freshness window, you may be depriving yourself of a better coffee experience.

Coffee, like wine to a certain degree, needs a bit of time to develop into its mature flavor profile.

That’s why Bridgeport Coffee does not mark “roast-on” dates on our 12-ounce bags, because we believe there are many misconceptions regarding coffee freshness and the impact of modern packaging. Instead, we use instead a “best if used by” approach. Although most of our coffees are sold with the first few weeks of roasting, the “best if used by” is a 90-day marking. Because we are convinced our packaging will maintain a high level of freshness up to 180 days, the 90-day time period has been chosen to ensure product quality stay at the high level our customer expect and deserve.

So if you have a bag of Bridgeport Coffee, and it’s two or even three months past the “best if used by” date, go ahead and drink. Although we wouldn’t necessarily recommend that with other coffees, we feel confident in our product (and our packaging) to deliver the right degree of freshness and flavor profile well beyond the “best if used by” date.

Happy sipping.
